Printer companies issues a “series” much like a car model. Jeep a different vehicles (a car series) and different models within that series. Jeep Cherokee is a car series and they have different models within the Jeep Cherokee family. TSP100 is of of Star’s printer series (like a car model) and TSP143… is the specific model. TSP143ii are current USB models and TSP143iii are the current LAN and Bluetooth models. Hope that helps. 🙂
Once you’ve bought your receipt printer, you need to set it up. Fortunately, this is pretty easy to do. You will need to follow some steps. Here are the steps that we’ve researched below. You’ll also want to look at your instruction manual that comes with your receipt printer.
2. USB Connection: If the cash drawer is connected via USB cable to the Square Stand: When you accept a cash payment, tap “Tender” from Square Register and your cash drawer will open automatically (If you’ve enabled PIN protection, you will need to provide the passcode).
There are a number of accessories that work Square for iOS beyond what’s on their officially compatible list. Please keep in mind that although we have tested the following hardware and found that it works, Square will not support it should you run into difficulties.
Restaurant owners need receipt printers that are heat and humidity resistant as they will likely place them in the kitchen where their staff can quickly receive new orders. Busy businesses that have a lot of staff moving around should look for a receipt printer in a sturdy clamshell housing that can survive being knocked over. If someone needs their receipt printer to communicate with several computers, they should get one with Ethernet and local area network connectivity.
3 INTERFACES- Allows to print via USB cable, Serial cable or even share the printer by many different computers via Ethernet/LAN. Also Includes RJ11/RJ12 Cash Drawer Kick Port. PAPER WIDTH- 3 1/8″ (80…
Please note, these printers can only be used with iOS devices at this time. I don’t have a timeline for when they’ll be supported with Android devices yet. But I’ll report back when I have an update! 😀
As VanKalkerFarms answer states, Point of Sale is not compatible with standard desktop printers at this time. A possible solution might be to view your receipts on your online Dashboard after the transaction is complete and you can print them from there on a desktop printer.
Receipt printers are designed to hold small paper roles, instead of vertically placed stacks of paper like one finds in standard 8.5″ by 11″ printers. Instead of connecting to a traditional keyboard, they usually hook up to a cash register or whatever device holds the business’ point of sale system. They’re usually quite compact since they sit on cluttered surfaces like the check-out area of a grocery store or the desk of a working professional.
Square for iOS is compatible with Ethernet or Bluetooth interface Star Micronics brand printers. They have also recently added compatibility with certain Epson receipt printers. There are both thermal and impact printers available. The following printers work with Square for iOS:

The new Square Contactless and Chip Reader is included so you can accept every way your customers want to pay. Place the reader in the dock, connect the dock to the USB hub, and you’re ready for business. Accept magstripe cards, chip cards, and NFC payments like Apple Pay.
Overall, this is a great printer. I can’t complain about the price because for similar thermal printers, this is relatively cheap. Any cheaper and there are issues with printing mechanics and whatnot.
Italy played a major role in the creation of the first modern, public banks. These banks made receipts that allowed people to travel without carrying large amounts of money. At the time, most money was still in coin form and far too heavy to keep in large quantities in a suitcase. Banks at the time would collect money from a customer, and give them a receipt for the amount. At that bank’s sister branch in another city, the customer could hand in their receipt, and receive physical money.
If you need a remote Kitchen Impact Order Printer, the Star SP742ML or SP742ME will work for all applications. It is a Dot Matrix Receipt Printer and uses a ribbon, so you can print on carbon copy paper rolls, or standard single ply :

Impact printers only print order tickets for a kitchen. They’re not affected by heat and can withstand warm environments. They require heat-sensitive paper and won’t work with non-thermal, receipt printer paper.
This is an impact printer. So it makes a noise when it prints. Why would you want this? You might want it if you are in an area such as a kitchen where thermal paper receipts don’t print as well because of moisture in the area. You would not want this noise around customers. But if you have a moist area such as a busy kitchen this impact printer may be what you can use. Here is the user manual for the Star Micronics SP742ML.
Star Micronics TSP100Receipt Printer is the first All-in-One receipt printer on the market today!. The advantage of TSP143LAN Receipt Printer is evident for applications such as retail, restaurants, and convenience stores. TSP143LAN Receipt Printer is provided with all standard operating system drivers (Windows, Linux and Mac) and specialty drivers such as OPOS and JPOS. The printer is also directly supported in Square Register. Star has also included a number of embedded simple utilities that will enhance Retail or Hospitality CRM in POS applications and therefore make the entire experience simple. These printers come complete with every thing you need including printer, power supply, Ethernet cable, wall bracket and a roll of thermal paper.
I kept the static method I’d written for having a single, unique lock and changed it to create a single, unique dispatch queue. The static method, however, introduced a new issue I’d overlooked: upon logging out of the app, the queue would persist while the code blocks it ran tried to access deallocated data. This new issue finally pushed me to use an even higher level concurrency abstraction, NSOperationQueue (see Apple’s documenation for more details). NSOperationQueues are built on top of GCD but provide several extra features, including the ability to cancel operations. Moving printer communication code to an NSOperation subclass was a small amount of extra work that paid big dividends. By storing the operation queue as an instance variable on the print controller, I was able to cancel all waiting printing and printer discovery operations and deallocate the queue itself in just a few lines of code.
Happy Memorial Day! Please note that since this is a public holiday, most banks are closed on 5/28, in addition to weekends. While Square has sent your deposits to your linked bank account, it might take your bank another business day or two to post these funds.
You may plug a receipt printer into one of the three USB ports found on the Square Stand accessories hub, but kitchen printers are typically located some distance away from your checkout register – farther away than a USB cable will reach.
The standard Square card reader is free with sign up from Square’s website (though it can take up to 10 days to receive it) or available for purchase for $10 from many retail locations such as Walmart, Target, and Best Buy, and includes a $10 rebate. See Where to Buy Square for locations.
Kitchen printers are typically impact printers. They use a ribbon in the printing process. Impact printers are not affected by heat and are therefore best suited for use in places like kitchens. Impact printers, (called dot matrix printers), use an ink ribbon to print on regular paper. The Star Micronics SP742 is an ideal printing solution for the kitchen. This fast, two-color printer offers crisp, easy to read type for quick viewing, a clamshell design for easy paper loading and an embedded power supply for space efficiency.
* All credit sale plans are issued by Square, Inc. Plans are not available to merchants located in AL, DE, MS, MO, NH, and TN. The individual authorized to act on behalf of the business must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and at least 18 years old. Valid U.S. bank account and Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number are required. Plans may be selected from 3-, 6-, 12-, or 24-month terms and are based on the financing amount requested. The finance charge amount and installment payment amounts will depend on the repayment term selected. Sales tax, where applicable, cannot be financed and will be due upon acceptance of contract. The final payment will be equal to or less than the regular monthly payment. All plans are subject to approval based on credit and other factors. Getting a credit decision requires a soft credit pull. Accepting a plan will result in a hard credit inquiry visible to other lenders, which could affect your credit score.

The printer that Square supports is one of the largest used brands in the receipt printer market. They are not getting kickbacks on printers as the printers are sold by hundreds of places including Amazon, and the buyer doesn’t know you are buying it to print with Square as the printer is also used by 100s of other POS systems. More printer options would always be better, but as this is one of the industry standard printers it only makes sense they support it.
The only receipt printers that Square recognizes are certain Star Micronics and Epson brand receipt printers, so the majority of receipt printers that work with Square are listed above. If you have the older TSP100 (which has since been replaced by the TSP100III) with an Ethernet interface, you can use that with Square.
Edit to say that the network issues I mentioned were tied to the wireless router we were using. Replaced that piece and the printer started working great. I still recommend purchasing as a package for better price and customer service, but not a bad piece of equipment.
A printer-driven cash drawer must be connected to an receipt printer to open automatically. Otherwise you’ll need to manually open the drawer using the cash drawer key. A USB cash drawer (requires Square Stand) will open automatically when connected.
With the Square Stand system, you can use either a cash drawer that plugs into the receipt printer, or one that plugs into the USB block of the Square Stand. Choose the method that suits your business best – but we typically recommend using the receipt printer connection, since this is simpler and far less expensive than the USB version. Note that all cash drawers listed below have special money trays configured for Canadian currency.

Thanks for your offer to look into this and the possibility of finding it in Canada. Now I’m thinking a Bluetooth printer wouldn’t be so bad. I assume I could get a second one at some point to work in our kitchen (no grease or anything like that). Wouldn’t mind help on finding out how much the printer is, cost to ship, etc. Would yo mind? Thanks. John
